Rochester Christian University is proud to announce Jalen Seawright as the recipient of the 2025 Alumnus of the Year award. A gifted musician, dedicated pastor, and devoted family man, Jalen embodies the heart of RCU’s mission—using his talents to inspire, lead, and serve in God’s world. From his time at RCU to his impactful ministry and musical career, he has remained a shining example of faith in action.
Jalen grew up in Pontiac, Michigan and later moved to Oxford where he graduated from Oxford High before coming to RCU in 2011. While at RCU Jalen was a member of the Acapella Chorus and a member of the small vocal ensemble, Autumn. Jalen is married to Keyonna and together they have three daughters— Karington, Kaidence, and Kyelinn. He serves as the Worship Pastor at LifeChurch Southfield, where he leads with passion and purpose. He developed a strong foundation in ministry, music, and community leadership at RCU while being shaped by the rich musical traditions of Motown and Detroit Gospel.
As a musician, Jalen has dedicated much of his life to serving churches in Michigan’s urban centers and beyond. He has traveled nationally, teaching and training churches on how the arts can serve the mission of justice. He is also a member of Common Hymnal, a group that uses their platform as an outlet for creatives on the margins of the Christian Faith. Jalen collaborates on projects that blend worship with advocacy. His work has been featured in various media outlets, including a live broadcast titled JOY and musical collaborations such as God of Color.
Jalen’s commitment to justice extends beyond music. He played a key role in the Be Love anthem, co-produced by Common Hymnal and The King Center, a nonprofit founded in 1968 by Coretta Scott King, that honors Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy through education and community programs. A touching video of Jalen singing Be Love with his children was shared by The King Center, reflecting his dedication to spreading love and justice through the arts.
Jalen remains deeply connected to RCU, giving back through leading worship and chapel speaking engagements. He has also led RCU’s annual Lift Every Voice and Sing event during February’s Black History Month the past four years with his gospel choir. He will be performing alongside his choir at the 54th Annual Partnership Dinner on April 12 at the Royal Park Hotel in Rochester, Michigan where he will be formally recognized as the 2025 Alumnus of the Year.
Vice President of Development, Luke Fleer said, “Jalen’s life and work reflect a deep commitment to faith, family, and service. His impact reaches far beyond the stage—his heart for ministry and his dedication to uplifting others. His journey is a powerful reminder of how God works through us when we step forward in faith. We are incredibly thankful of his dedication to his alma mater and proud to honor him as our 2025 Alumnus of the Year.”
For his exceptional contributions and steadfast commitment to using his gifts for a greater purpose, RCU is honored to name Jalen Seawright the 2025 Alumnus of the Year.
