Rochester Christian University is adding women’s flag football as its 23rd varsity sport beginning with the 2027-28 academic year.

Women’s flag football is a seven-on-seven competition that differs from standard football in that it utilizes a shorter and narrower field, thus encouraging players to focus on speed, skill and strategy.

“Launching women’s flag football is about more than adding a program — it’s about creating new opportunities for young women to compete, grow and be part of the Warrior family,” said Dr. Jaime Cuellar, vice president for intercollegiate athletics & strategic enrollment. “This sport is exploding in popularity at the collegiate level, and we’re proud to be ahead of that curve.”

RCU is one of four Wolverine–Hoosier Athletic Conference members to add women’s flag football, along with Defiance College, University of Northwestern Ohio and Indiana Tech.

The WHAC is part of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, which elevated flag football to championship status in 2026. RCU’s team will begin competing in spring 2028.
